Ricardo Tosto: The Renowned Brazilian Lawyer
Brazil is among the countries with the largest number of lawyers. This is mainly because of the huge number of law schools present in the country. Brazil has law schools in each of its states. In 2010, Brazil had a total of 321,885 with Sao Paulo having one-third of all practicing lawyers in the country. The State of Rio de Janeiro was second with 112,515 lawyers followed by State of Minas Gerais which had 63,978 lawyers.
In 2010, statistics showed that Brazil offered 1,240 courses of law. As a result, there have been unsatisfactory grades for the past few years in the Difference Indicator of Expected and Observed Performance (IDD) and National Exam of Student Performance (ENADE). The Ministry of Education is, therefore, regulating the course to make improvements.
Search for Quality
In 2014, the Ministry of Education started performing inspections on the law courses offered in Brazil. The inspections are aimed at examining if the courses are conducted in accordance with the standards of law education. This will subsequently reduce the number of law students who are not approved after sitting for the Bar Examination.
According to the Brazilian Ministry of Education, only 14% of candidates who sat for the bar examination in 2010 passed the test. This is a serious problem because the only way to practice law in the country is by getting approval after passing the examination.
